Why this stretch of coast is made for walking
The southern Gold Coast was built for a slow morning on foot. Between Tugun and Currumbin you get a string of beaches, a tidal creek mouth, and a couple of headlands all linked by flat, mostly paved paths — the kind of walking where you can push a pram, bring the dog, or just amble with a coffee and not think too hard about it.
We are based at 570 Gold Coast Highway in Tugun, directly opposite Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, so most of these walks start within a few minutes of our courtyard. This is the route we send friends and first-time visitors on, with notes on where to start, what to look out for, and where to land afterwards. If you are planning the wider day, our guide to the area around the Sanctuary covers the bigger picture.
Tugun Beach: the quiet local favourite
Tugun Beach is the unhurried one. It rarely draws the crowds of its busier neighbours, which is exactly why locals love it for a sunrise lap. The patrolled stretch is backed by a grassy foreshore reserve with shade trees and picnic tables, and the sand is firm enough for an easy barefoot walk at low tide.
Head south and you can follow the beach and foreshore path toward Bilinga and the Gold Coast Airport end; head north and you are pointed toward Flat Rock and Currumbin. It is a gentle, open walk with plenty of places to stop and watch the water. Start early if you can — the light here in the first hour after dawn is the best reason to set an alarm.
The Currumbin foreshore & Currumbin Alley
The Currumbin foreshore is the heart of this guide. The path traces Currumbin Creek as it meets the sea at the Alley — a sheltered, shallow channel that is a favourite with families, longboarders and stand-up paddlers. Walking the foreshore here is flat and pram-friendly, with the creek on one side and parkland on the other, and it is an easy out-and-back of whatever length suits you.
It is also one of the most rewarding short walks on the southern Gold Coast for simply watching coastal life happen: kayaks heading up the creek, kids in the shallows, and pelicans working the channel. Time it with a falling tide and the sandbanks open up beautifully.
Elephant Rock & Flat Rock
At the northern end of Currumbin Beach sits Elephant Rock — the granite headland that gives the beach its postcard. A short, well-formed path takes you up and around it, and from the top you get the long view back down the coast. It is a brief climb rather than a hike, and an easy add-on to a foreshore walk.
Elephant Rock is also the home of the SWELL Sculpture Festival, held along Currumbin Beach from 11–20 September 2026, when the sand becomes an open-air gallery — a lovely time of year to combine a walk with something to look at. Closer to Tugun, Flat Rock is the smaller rocky point worth a detour at low tide for the rock pools.
Where to refuel afterwards
Half the pleasure of a morning walk is the stop at the end of it. Back at our Tugun courtyard, Stable opens early — from around 6am — for specialty coffee and a proper breakfast, which makes it an easy finish line after a sunrise lap. It is licensed and serves lunch too, if your walk runs long.
If you are putting together a picnic instead of sitting down, Quince Cellar can sort you with cheese, charcuterie and a grazing board to carry down to the foreshore. We are open seven days, with free parking and a dog-friendly courtyard, so the whole thing — walk, coffee, browse — fits neatly into one easy morning. You can see the full line-up of our independent stores if you want to make more of it.
Finding us & planning your morning
We are roughly six minutes from Gold Coast Airport and a natural stretch-your-legs stop on the drive south to Byron Bay, so these walks suit travellers as much as locals. Park once with us, walk the foreshore, and come back for coffee — no shuffling the car between spots.
For maps, parking notes and the easiest approach from the highway or the airport, see our directions page. If you would rather make a half-day of it, the stopover guide pairs these walks with the rest of what is on offer around Tugun and Currumbin.
Good to know
What is the best beach walk near Currumbin?
The Currumbin foreshore walk along Currumbin Creek to the Alley is the local favourite — flat, pram and dog-friendly, and easy to extend up to Elephant Rock at the northern end of Currumbin Beach. For a quieter option, Tugun Beach and its foreshore reserve are a short stroll from our precinct.
Are these walks suitable for prams and dogs?
Yes. The Currumbin foreshore and Tugun Beach foreshore paths are flat and mostly paved, which makes them comfortable with a pram. Dogs are welcome on lead in the foreshore reserves, and our Tugun courtyard is dog-friendly, so you can bring them along for coffee afterwards. Always check current local signage for dog and beach access rules.
Where can I get coffee after a Currumbin or Tugun beach walk?
Stable, the café in our Tugun precinct opposite Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, opens early — from around 6am — for specialty coffee and breakfast, with lunch later in the day. It is a few minutes from both the Tugun and Currumbin foreshores, with free parking on site.
How far is Cornerstone Stores from the walks and the airport?
